As global trade continues to shift towards lower emissions, Whale is taking proactive steps to adapt to the demands of a rapidly evolving landscape. Driven by its ambition to become an environmentally responsible logistics provider, the company has reached a significant milestone by investing in advanced electric truck technology. This initiative enhances operational efficiency while aligning with global sustainability standards, positioning Whale at the forefront of Thailand’s green transportation movement.

In this issue, LM spoke with Mr. Teerachit Sornchaeng, Chief Executive Officer of Whale Logistics Group, about the company’s vision for green logistics, its adoption of battery-swapping technology, and its plans to expand container yard capacity to meet the evolving needs of global trade.

The logistics sector remains a major contributor to global carbon emissions and air pollutants. As environmental awareness continues to grow, businesses are increasingly seeking practical ways to decarbonise their supply chains. In response, Whale Logistics Group has taken a forward-looking approach by integrating advanced technologies into its core operations to drive greener logistics practices in Thailand.

In a landmark move over the past year, Whale announced the acquisition of 1,000 battery-electric trucks equipped with battery-swapping technology, alongside plans to develop a dedicated automated battery-swapping station network. This initiative represents the first large-scale implementation of SWAP technology in Thailand and across the ASEAN region.

To ensure international standards of operational excellence, Whale has partnered with U POWER Group, a global leader in battery-swapping solutions. This collaboration supports the development of Whale’s ‘Green Ecosystem’, enabling faster and more efficient transport operations while directly contributing to customers’ sustainability goals.

“Investing in high-value innovation to build a green ecosystem is our top priority and a core mission,” Mr. Teerachit explains. “We see ourselves not only as a logistics provider, but as a strategic partner supporting our clients in achieving sustainable growth. Our goal is to develop Thai green logistics that can compete on the global stage.”

The transition to an electric fleet highlights Whale’s readiness to meet increasingly stringent environmental standards. It also marks a decisive step towards comprehensive carbon footprint management, reinforcing the company’s commitment as a certified Carbon Footprint for Organization (CFO) entity.

SWAP technology is an advanced automated battery-replacement solution designed to overcome one of the key limitations of conventional electric vehicles—long charging times. While traditional electric trucks may require around one hour for a full charge, SWAP technology enables a complete battery exchange in just six minutes. This not only improves operational agility but also ensures continuity, maximises fleet utilisation, and reduces overall operating costs.

As part of this initiative, Whale plans to install Thailand’s first automated battery-swapping station in a strategic location near Laem Chabang Port, with phase one completion and system testing targeted for April. Future phases will expand the network to additional locations across Chonburi and other key logistics areas.

In the initial phase, Whale will deploy a pilot fleet of 30 battery-swap electric trucks. These vehicles will be used for operational testing, with a focus on data collection to support infrastructure development, establish safety standards, and optimise operational processes. This pilot programme reflects Whale’s commitment to building a robust ecosystem for green logistics in Thailand.

“With our expertise and experience, Whale is ready to lead the practical implementation of SWAP technology,” Mr. Teerachit adds. “We aim to build a strong foundation for green logistics and demonstrate that electric trucking can deliver both efficiency and reliability.”

Alongside its transition to green logistics, Whale Logistics Group is expanding its container yard and storage capacity by more than 300,000 square metres. This development is designed to support growth across multiple sectors, particularly the rapidly expanding automotive industry. The new facilities are built with flexibility in mind, allowing for seamless adaptation to different cargo types while maximising space efficiency.

The company is also transitioning towards a mixed-use infrastructure model to enhance service agility across industries. By integrating advanced technologies into its One-Stop Service framework, Whale delivers a full spectrum of logistics services, including general and free zone warehousing, end-to-end freight solutions, and customs clearance. Supported by high-performance equipment and a robust Warehouse Management System (WMS), these capabilities ensure accuracy, speed, and seamless coordination across operations.

“Whale will continue to develop our capabilities to meet evolving market demands,” Mr. Teerachit says. “We remain committed to investing in new technologies to provide services that are more comprehensive, flexible, and sustainable for our customers and partners.”

Whale Logistics Group’s ongoing investments represent more than preparation for future challenges—they reflect a long-term commitment to elevating service standards to an international level. By combining advanced technologies with a customer-centric approach, the company aims to deliver tangible competitive advantages through high-efficiency, sustainable logistics solutions.
