Sea transport remains one of the most efficient modes for moving goods in bulk. Yet, despite its logistical advantages, the shipping industry is among the most carbon-intensive sectors, with a significant impact on the global environment. In response, container terminal operators worldwide are embracing the concept of the ‘Green Port’ – an operational approach aimed at achieving environmental sustainability through cleaner, more energy-efficient practices.

For HPT, the Green Port philosophy means more than compliance; it represents leadership in terminal management, proactive adoption of technology, and a steadfast commitment to social and environmental responsibility. It is also a critical step towards the group’s target of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050, as validated and approved by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). As part of this vision, HPT has strengthened the environmental performance of its operations and developed Terminal D, which commenced vessel operations in 2018.

Environmental stewardship remains a central pillar of HPT’s strategy, reflected in its adoption of advanced green technologies. At Terminal D, the implementation of gate automation has streamlined identity verification and container information checks through a combination of hardware and digital systems, replacing traditional paper-based processes. This not only reduces paper consumption – thereby conserving trees – but also cuts the emissions associated with paper production and waste.

Beyond the gates, Terminal D is home to electric, remote-controlled quay cranes and rubber-tyred gantry cranes. These innovations enhance working conditions by enabling operators to work from remote-control rooms, while significantly reducing Scope 1 carbon emissions without compromising operational performance.

HPT is the first terminal operator in Thailand to deploy autonomous trucks alongside its electric fleet. These driverless vehicles are equipped with advanced safety features, including obstacle detection sensors, AI-powered cameras, and satellite navigation systems, allowing them to operate seamlessly alongside manned trucks.

The transition from diesel-powered trucks to electric vehicles delivers substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and local air pollutants.

HPT’s environmental initiatives have earned industry recognition, most notably the Green Port Award System (GPAS) in 2022. The award acknowledges excellence in management and environmental performance, with criteria including pollution prevention, air quality management, wastewater treatment, energy efficiency, and emissions reduction – all hallmarks of a genuine green port.

These accolades highlight HPT’s consistent delivery of environmentally responsible port management across all its facilities, reinforcing its standing as a leader in sustainable terminal operations in Thailand.

HPT’s sustainability strategy extends beyond its terminal gates, with a strong focus on community engagement and environmental education.

The company has partnered with the Faculty of International Maritime Studies at Kasetsart University’s Sriracha Campus for the ‘Go Green’ project, which educates students on sustainable business operations and marine environmental protection. In collaboration with the Khao Yai National Park Protection Foundation, HPT also supports the ‘Next Gen New World’ initiative, which trains young people in nature conservation, both on land and at sea.

HPT regularly hosts industry seminars on environmental best practice and works closely with neighboring communities to promote sustainable development and conservation awareness.

The delivery of the 18 new electric trucks represents more than an equipment upgrade – it is a tangible step towards HPT’s carbon reduction targets. It underscores the company’s role as an environmentally responsible terminal operator, setting a benchmark for the industry and contributing to the long-term sustainability of both the logistics sector and the communities it serves.
