Yang Ming Methanol-Ready Containership

Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation has ordered three additional 8,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel-ready containerships from Nihon Shipyard and Imabari Shipbuilding. The new vessels are scheduled for delivery between 2028 and 2030, bringing the total number of this class to six, following a previous order in March.

The order is part of a broader fleet optimization plan to add up to 13 new containerships in the 8,000 to 15,000 TEU range. The plan includes six methanol dual-fuel-ready ships and seven 15,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel vessels, which will replace aging vessels that have been in service for more than 20 years.

Enhancing Service and Sustainability

The new vessels are expected to stabilize mid- to long-term fleet deployment and strengthen the company’s service offerings. The 8,000 TEU ships will feature energy-efficient main engines and a methanol dual-fuel-ready design, providing flexibility to adapt to the evolving availability of alternative fuels and future regulatory changes.

Yang Ming is implementing its fleet modernization plan to enhance its competitiveness and operational resilience amid ongoing global supply chain restructuring.
