London Gateway 52% Surge in Container Volumes

DP World has set a massive new handling record at its London Gateway terminal, processing over 3 million TEUs in 2025. This milestone represents a staggering 52% increase compared to the 1.9 million TEUs handled in 2024, firmly positioning the facility as a central artery for British trade.

The surge was largely driven by the successful integration of the newly operational fourth berth and the strategic decision by the Gemini Cooperation to utilize London Gateway as a primary hub for its Asia–Europe routes.

Strengthening the UK’s Logistics Core

Combined with the 2 million TEUs handled at its Southampton terminal, DP World’s total UK throughput surpassed 5 million TEUs in 2025—accounting for more than half of the national container market, which totaled approximately 9 million TEUs.

To maintain this momentum, DP World is aggressively expanding its infrastructure:

  • Berth Expansion: A £1 billion investment is currently underway to build two additional all-electric berths. Once complete, London Gateway will feature six berths capable of handling the world’s largest ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs).
  • Rail Connectivity: A second rail terminal launched operations in 2025, significantly increasing the port’s capacity for lower-carbon inland distribution.
  • Southampton Modernization: Later this year, Southampton will receive a new fleet of quay cranes as part of a £60 million upgrade. Standing taller than Big Ben, these will form the tallest quay crane fleet in Europe, designed to service 24,000+ TEU megaships.

BOXBAY: Revolutionizing Terminal Efficiency

A key highlight of the future roadmap is the £170 million investment in the BOXBAY high-bay storage system. Set to be built over the next two years, this fully automated “Empty Superstack” will:

  • Store empty containers up to 16 tiers high in a vertical rack structure.
  • Drastically reduce the “rehandling” of containers, which currently slows down yard operations.
  • Free up landside space to increase overall throughput and safety while reducing truck turnaround times.

Stephen Whittingham, Executive Vice President for North Europe at DP World, noted that these investments in capacity and technology allow the company to move goods “more reliably, sustainably, and efficiently from ship to shop,” ensuring UK supply chains remain resilient during peak demand.
