In a move to significantly lower costs for South American consumers, COSCO SHIPPING Lines has launched a new “sea transportation + postal clearance” logistics channel. This innovative route connects Shanghai directly to the recently inaugurated Port of Chancay, providing a dedicated pipeline for Chinese cross-border e-commerce goods that were previously reliant on expensive air freight.

The service marks the first time Chinese e-commerce products have entered the Peruvian market through a combined maritime and national postal framework.
Bypassing Air Freight Costs
Historically, Peruvian shoppers faced high logistics premiums because e-commerce parcels were shipped almost exclusively by air. The new “Shanghai-Chancay” direct service leverages the economies of scale inherent in ocean transport to offer a more sustainable and affordable alternative.
- Integrated Delivery: Once vessels dock at the Port of Chancay, Peru Post (Serpost) takes immediate custody of the cargo, managing both customs clearance and the final-mile delivery to consumers’ doorsteps.
- Price Impact: The shift from air to sea is expected to create significant room for lowering end-consumer prices on popular Chinese electronics, home goods, and apparel.
- Supply Stability: By utilizing scheduled maritime rotations, COSCO ensures a more consistent flow of goods, reducing the “out-of-stock” instances common with fluctuating air cargo capacity.
Chancay: The New Gateway for South-South Trade
The Port of Chancay, which celebrated its first anniversary of operations in late 2024, has quickly become a cornerstone of the New Asia-Latin America Land-Sea Corridor. The port’s deep-water berths and automated systems allow it to process the large volumes required for e-commerce growth that smaller regional ports cannot handle.
This collaboration with Serpost is part of a broader “logistics innovation” strategy by COSCO SHIPPING to convert infrastructure investment into tangible benefits for local populations. Beyond e-commerce, the corridor has already shortened the transit time for Peruvian agricultural exports—such as blueberries and avocados—to China to just 23 days.
