Wallenius Wilhelmsen First Shaper Class Pure Car Truck Carrier Arctic Tern

Wallenius Wilhelmsen has taken delivery of Arctic Tern, the first dual-fuel vessel in its new Shaper Class series, marking a key milestone in the carrier’s fleet renewal strategy.

The vessel will be deployed through EUKOR Car Carriers—a joint venture between Wallenius Wilhelmsen and Hyundai Motor Group—and will immediately enter service on trade routes between Asia and Europe.

Vessel Capabilities and Environmental Features

Designed to handle automotive and high-and-heavy roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) cargo, Arctic Tern is built with dual-fuel capability and is ready to operate on methanol.

Key operational and technical features include:

  • Alternative Fuel Transition: Scheduled to undergo its first methanol bunkering shortly after entering commercial operations, supporting lower-emission transport options.
  • Efficiency & Capacity: Features increased cargo capacity, improved hull efficiency, and enhanced onboard operational systems compared to earlier vessel generations.
  • Fleet Ambition: Serves as a foundational element in Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s goal to offer net-zero end-to-end supply chain services by 2027.

Inter-Company Engineering and Ship Management

The Shaper Class newbuild program was executed through close coordination among Wallenius Wilhelmsen, site manager Wallenius Marine, and ship manager Wilhelmsen Ship Management:

  • Site Supervision: Wallenius Marine oversaw site management and delivery readiness at the shipyard during construction.
  • Vessel Management: Wilhelmsen Ship Management assumes operational responsibility for crew management, technical oversight, and vessel maintenance following delivery.

Executive Perspectives

Xavier Leroi, COO Shipping Services at Wallenius Wilhelmsen and CEO of EUKOR Car Carriers, noted that the Shaper Class vessels strengthen the carrier’s ability to offer lower-emission shipping options while meeting growing global trade demands.

Håkon Lenz, President and CEO of Wilhelmsen Ship Management, and Johan Mattsson, CEO of Wallenius Marine, emphasized that managing the advanced vessel series requires tight technical integration and specialized crew expertise across the newbuilding fleet.
