Ocean carrier Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation has signed a shipbuilding contract with South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean for the construction of six 13,000 TEU-class LNG dual-fuel container vessels.
The newbuildings are scheduled for delivery between 2028 and 2029 to support Yang Ming’s East-West trade services, including transpacific routes to the US East and West Coasts, South America, and the Mediterranean.
Vessel Engineering and Energy Efficiency Technology
Each ship features a maximum capacity of 13,650 TEU and integrates propulsion systems designed to meet international greenhouse gas reduction mandates:
- Propulsion and Alternative Fuel Capabilities: Equipped with LNG dual-fuel main engines—capable of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by up to 20%—and constructed with Ammonia Fuel Ready specifications utilizing converted LNG storage tanks.
- Fuel System Architecture: Features Type B LNG fuel tanks rated at 1.0 bar design pressure to optimize fuel holding times and operational safety during bunkering.
- Energy-Saving Modifications: Incorporates physical airflow and hydrodynamic devices, including forward wind shields, rudder bulbs, pre-swirl stators, shore power connection systems, and integrated smart ship telematics with cybersecurity protections.
Long-Term Fleet Renewal and Green Capacity Roadmap
The contract advances Yang Ming’s broader fleet optimization framework target to introduce 24 low-carbon vessels by 2030:
- Dual-Fuel Fleet Portfolio: The 2030 fleet plan comprises 18 LNG dual-fuel vessels (five 15,500 TEU, seven 16,000 TEU, and the six 13,000 TEU vessels under this contract) alongside six 8,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel-ready ships.
- Network Optimization: Provides operational flexibility to deploy neo-Panamax tonnage across primary East-West trade lanes while replacing aging conventional tonnage to lower overall fleet carbon intensity.
