Ocean container carrier Hapag-Lloyd has expanded its strategic partnership with global port operator DP World to secure long-term terminal capacity and support port infrastructure development across five key African trade gateways.
The agreement supports Hapag-Lloyd’s African network expansion as the carrier projects its transport volumes across the continent to exceed one million TEU in 2026.
Terminal Capacity Agreements and Infrastructure Scope
The expanded cooperation focuses on securing long-term berth access and supporting landside port development across East and West Africa:
- Dedicated Terminal Capacity: Secures long-term operational capacity at existing DP World terminal facilities in Dakar (Senegal), Luanda (Angola), and Dar Es Salaam (Tanzania).
- Port Infrastructure Development: Commits to collaborative infrastructure expansion projects at greenfield and developing port sites in Banana (Democratic Republic of the Congo) and Maputo (Mozambique).
- Volume Growth Targets: Provides port infrastructure support to manage Hapag-Lloyd’s anticipated regional throughput milestone of over one million TEU in 2026.
Terminal Portfolio Strategy
The DP World agreement complements Hapag-Lloyd’s broader global terminal management framework:
- Diversified Operator Network: Maintains partnerships across third-party terminal operators to ensure landside access and operational flexibility.
- Proprietary Terminal Expansion: Works alongside Hapag-Lloyd’s internal terminal operator division, Hanseatic Global Terminals (HGT), to grow its owned terminal equity portfolio worldwide.
Executive Perspective
Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd AG, stated that securing reliable terminal capacity and scalable port infrastructure through DP World is critical to supporting Hapag-Lloyd’s long-term service expansion across African growth markets.
