South Korean Carrier to Deploy “HiNAS Control” Across 40 Vessels

HMM, South Korea’s leading national carrier, has signed a landmark contract with Avikus, the autonomous navigation subsidiary of HD Hyundai, to install AI-based navigation systems on 40 vessels. This agreement represents the largest single supply contract for autonomous navigation solutions in the maritime industry to date, signaling a definitive shift from technical trials to large-scale commercialization.

In tandem with the deployment, HMM has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) and Avikus for joint research and technical cooperation to further refine these next-generation technologies.

Level 2 Autonomy: Active Vessel Control

The rollout centers on the HiNAS Control system, a “Level 2” autonomous solution. Unlike previous assistance systems that only provided decision support, HiNAS Control actively manages the vessel’s operations:

  • Autonomous Operation: The system sets optimal routes and performs active vessel control, including steering and speed adjustments, without constant crew intervention.
  • Safety & Awareness: Advanced AI provides real-time situational awareness to prevent maritime accidents and reduce the risks associated with crew fatigue.
  • Economic Efficiency: By maintaining optimal speeds and routes, the technology is expected to maximize fuel savings and significantly reduce carbon emissions.
  • Operational Continuity: The system offers a high-tech solution to the growing global shortage of seafarers by reducing the workload on current crew members.

Strategic Roles and Fleet Expansion

Under the MOU, the three partners have defined specific roles to ensure the project’s success. HMM will oversee the deployment and provide vital real-world operational data. HD KSOE will deliver the vessel platforms and comprehensive technical support for system integration. Avikus will focus on the continued advancement and supply of the autonomous navigation software.

Won-hyuk Choi, CEO of HMM, stated that AI-based technology is a “core pillar” for strengthening competitiveness in a digital and eco-friendly shipping ecosystem. While the initial phase covers 40 ships—primarily through retrofits—HMM plans to assess the performance data with the intent of expanding the technology across its entire global fleet. This deal also marks a milestone for Avikus, which has now surpassed 100 cumulative units supplied to large-scale commercial vessels.
