Seaboard Marine Electric Mobile Harbour Cranes U.S. Trade Hubs

Seaboard Marine has ordered three electrically powered LHM 550 mobile harbour cranes from Liebherr to strengthen cargo handling capacity at key U.S. terminals.

The cranes will be deployed at the company’s private terminals at PortMiami and the Port of Houston, supporting container and multipurpose cargo operations across Seaboard Marine’s regional trade network.

Expanding Capacity at Major U.S. Ports

The LHM 550 cranes will be configured with electric drive systems, tower extensions and customised supporting pads to meet operational requirements at the two ports.

With an outreach of up to 54 metres and a lifting capacity of up to 104 metric tonnes, the cranes are designed to handle New-Panamax vessels while maintaining efficient turnaround times. According to the manufacturer, the electric drive configuration also supports future shore power integration as ports continue to advance electrification initiatives.

At PortMiami, where more than 1.1 million TEUs were handled in 2024, the new equipment is expected to improve berth productivity and support growth in refrigerated cargo and breakbulk shipments. Seaboard Marine is currently the largest carrier by cargo volume at the port.

The additional crane capacity at the Port of Houston, which handled more than 4.1 million TEUs in 2024, will enhance flexibility for container and multipurpose cargo handling while supporting the company’s regional services across the Americas.

Long-Term Equipment Partnership

The project builds on a partnership between Seaboard Marine and Liebherr that began in 2001. With this delivery, the company’s fleet will include a total of 11 Liebherr cranes in operation.

Seaboard Marine, founded in 1983, operates a fleet of more than 20 vessels and over 60,000 containers, serving nearly 40 ports across the Americas.

The new cranes are expected to support the company’s ongoing investment in infrastructure and operational efficiency as trade volumes continue to grow across its network.
