Cargo handling and maritime equipment provider MacGregor has secured a comprehensive contract to supply hatch covers and cargo securing equipment for six 1,700 TEU dual-fuel LNG-powered containerships.
The vessels are currently being built at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) in India for global container line CMA CGM, with deliveries scheduled between 2029 and 2031.
Scope of Supply and Engineering Package
Booked during the second quarter of 2026, MacGregor’s scope encompasses the complete design, steel structure fabrication, and key components for hatch covers, alongside engineering and components for cell guides, deck stanchions, and fixed container fittings.
Key project milestones include:
- Historic Shipbuilding Milestone: Marks the first time a major international carrier has commissioned LNG-powered vessels from an Indian shipyard, reinforcing India’s strategic role in sustainable shipbuilding under the “Make in India” initiative.
- Dual-Fuel and Low-Carbon Readiness: The 1,700 TEU vessels operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and are built to transition toward low-carbon fuels, aligning with CMA CGM’s target of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
- Local Agency Support: Coordination between MacGregor and Cochin Shipyard was supported by VARYA Tech Private Limited, MacGregor’s long-term Indian market agent.

Magnus Sjöberg, Executive Vice President at MacGregor, noted that the integrated cargo system contract underscores the company’s capability to support complex, sustainable newbuild projects globally.
