Kalmar and global port operator APM Terminals have entered into a strategic partnership to co-develop next-generation terminal technology and enhance automated container terminal operations.
The collaboration centers on software co-development and long-term product roadmap alignment, focusing on Kalmar’s core terminal automation system.
Core Initiatives and System Access
The agreement is built around two primary technical and operational initiatives:
- Joint Software Development: APM Terminals gains direct access to the Kalmar One automation system source code, enabling joint engineering teams to co-develop, refine, and deploy software updates across existing and future automated terminals.
- Operational Roadmap Alignment: Incorporates APM Terminals’ operational feedback directly into the Kalmar One system architecture, shaping feature updates to match real-world terminal requirements.
- Automation-as-a-Service Model: Establishes a framework to deliver technology and operational support through a scalable service model.
Industry Impact and Fleet Deployment
APM Terminals currently operates the Kalmar One platform at its Pier 400 facility in Los Angeles, California—the largest container terminal in the Western Hemisphere.
Hans Jacobs, Head of Operational Technology & Analytics at APM Terminals, noted that combining Kalmar’s software with APM Terminals’ operational insight creates safer, more adaptable automation tools aligned with real-world port needs.
Juuso Kanner, Vice President of Automation at Kalmar, highlighted that all existing and future Kalmar One users will benefit from software enhancements developed through APM Terminals’ operational expertise.
