A strategic alliance between Hateco Group and APM Terminals culminated this past weekend with the grand opening celebration of the new Hateco Haiphong International Container Terminal (HHIT). Located at Lach Huyen port, this modern facility introduces two new deep-water berths, poised to accommodate mega-vessel services up to 18,000 TEU, significantly enhancing Vietnam’s shipping and logistics landscape.
As an independent entity within the A.P. Moller-Maersk integrated setup, APM Terminals brings global expertise to this venture. Robert Mærsk Uggla, Chairman of A.P. Moller – Maersk, underscored the project’s significance: “We stand here today with immense pride as strategic partners, enabling and celebrating this huge step forward for Vietnamese shipping and logistics capabilities. As Northern Vietnam’s most modern and largest deep-water container port, this new facility will empower businesses, generate employment, and connect Vietnam to the world in a more efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible manner. Maersk is dedicated to deepening our collaboration with Vietnam and our strategic partner, Hateco, offering our expertise and best practices to deliver value across Haiphong and beyond.”
The project benefited from APM Terminals’ shared best practices in safety, port automation, artificial intelligence integration, process optimization, and decarbonization—all mutual priorities for the public-private partners. Notably, HHIT has also been selected as part of the Gemini Cooperation, the new East-West network formed by Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd.

Tran Van Ky, Chairman of the Hateco Board of Directors, celebrated the rapid realization of the project: “In just 30 months, what was once a dream has become the most modern maritime gateway for Northern Vietnam. For Hateco, it is not merely a new port; it is a gateway for progress, a symbol of partnership, and a testament to the power of vision, innovation, and collaboration. Hateco, with its dedicated employees, recognizes the indispensable support from the Vietnamese government’s foresight and trust in this strategic infrastructure project. We also deeply appreciate the experts and advisors from Maersk and APM Terminals, whose global insights made HHIT’s construction and operations smarter, greener, and faster.”
Further cementing their collaboration, Hateco and APM Terminals signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the opening ceremony. This agreement outlines plans to deepen and expand their strategic partnership in port and logistics investment and operations within Haiphong, with potential for new strategic locations across Vietnam.
The grand opening saw the participation of Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Mai Van Chinh and Danish Ambassador to Vietnam and Laos Mr. Nicolai Prytz, who lauded the impressive development of the HHIT deep-water port and the successful partnership. This collaboration is set to significantly contribute to the deepening trade and cultural ties between Europe and Vietnam.
