DP World Groundbreaking BOXBAY Empty Superstack London Gateway

£170 Million Investment in High Bay Storage Technology to Revolutionize Empty Container Handling, Setting New Efficiency and Safety Benchmarks

DP World is making a significant investment of £170 million in cutting-edge container handling technology at its London Gateway logistics hub. This investment introduces BOXBAY’s new Empty Superstack, a revolutionary system that marks a major step forward in the digitalization and automation of port operations by utilizing High Bay Storage (HBS) technology.

Operating like a giant vending machine for containers, the fully electric system will store 20- and 40-foot empty containers up to 16 tiers high inside a fully enclosed, automated facility. This dramatic vertical stacking capability results in a major improvement in yard capacity, efficiency, and safety.

Transforming Port Operations and Throughput

Developed by BOXBAY, a joint venture between DP World and Germany’s SMS group, the Empty Superstack uses fully electric stacker cranes to handle containers with precision, automatically retrieving and delivering them for onward transport. The system is installed at London Gateway’s new all-electric Berth 4 and will be capable of holding up to 27,000 TEU of empty containers. The project is expected to be completed in just over two years.

The modular Empty Superstack system is designed to integrate seamlessly into existing port operations without requiring changes to landside or seaside interfaces. By removing multiple tiers of empty containers from the automated stacking crane (ASC) yard, the system fundamentally reduces rehandling and housekeeping. This allows the primary ASCs to operate more efficiently, improving performance across the quay, leading to faster truck turnaround times, and ultimately creating a more productive and sustainable terminal.

Scalable, Sustainable, and Proven Technology

Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, emphasized that BOXBAY technology represents a leap forward in container storage management. He described the solution as scalable, automated, and sustainable, noting that bringing this ingenious design to London Gateway will unlock faster throughput and contribute to higher safety standards.

Stephen Whittingham, Executive Vice President, North Europe, DP World, added that the investment will boost reliability for customers, minimize truck visit times in port, and create a safer, smarter working environment.

The BOXBAY system has already proven its capabilities through extensive trials at DP World’s Jebel Ali Port in Dubai, where it successfully handled nearly 500,000 TEU using the technology. Its modular design and advanced energy regeneration features position BOXBAY as one of the most sustainable container handling systems in the world, reinforcing DP World’s vision to set new global standards for the port industry.
