iReefer and Controlled Atmosphere Technologies Take Center Stage in Berlin

MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company) is set to return to Fruit Logistica, the world’s leading trade fair for the fresh produce industry, from 4–6 February 2026. Located in Hall 26, Stand E10, MSC’s global reefer team will demonstrate how the carrier’s specialized fleet and digital tools are redefining “farm-to-market” logistics for highly sensitive cargo.

With global demand for exotic fruits and organic produce reaching record highs, MSC is emphasizing its ability to maintain “shelf-ready” quality through a combination of high-tech atmosphere control and 24/7 IoT monitoring.

Preserving Freshness: Beyond Simple Cooling

Standard refrigeration is often insufficient for long-haul voyages involving “respiring” commodities like avocados, berries, and bananas. MSC is highlighting its specialized Controlled Atmosphere (CA) and Cold Treatment (CT) solutions to address these challenges:

  • Atmosphere Regulation: MSC utilizes advanced CA systems (including StarCool CA, XtendFRESH, and Purfresh) to actively adjust O2 and CO2 levels. This slows the ripening process and prevents the buildup of ethylene gas, which can lead to premature spoilage.
  • Chemical-Free Disinfection: The Cold Treatment (CT) protocol serves as a chemical-free alternative to fumigation. By maintaining fruit pulp at precise, low temperatures for a specific duration, MSC eliminates pests like fruit flies while preserving the organic integrity of the produce.
  • Energy-Saving Design: The fleet features Star Cool units, which utilize a frequency converter to match compressor speed to the exact cooling demand, reducing energy consumption by up to 20% compared to traditional units.

MSC iReefer: The “Digital Eye” on Your Cargo

A central focus of the 2026 exhibit is the MSC iReefer technology, an IoT-driven ecosystem that provides shippers with unprecedented transparency. Available in three tiers—Essential, Pro, and Ultimate—the system offers:

  • Real-Time Telemetry: Continuous monitoring of temperature, humidity, and ventilation settings via the myMSC portal.
  • Global Connectivity: A hybrid of GSM and Satellite communication ensures that data flows even when vessels are in the middle of the ocean.
  • Proactive Alerts: If a container deviates from its set-point, automated alarms allow MSC’s 24/7 Control Towers to intervene immediately, potentially saving thousands of dollars in cargo value.

Connecting Global Hubs

The MSC booth will also feature trade specialists who can discuss the carrier’s latest route expansions. Notably, the Alpaca service now provides a fast, direct link between South American fruit exporters and the growing Asian markets, while the Wallaby and Ingwe services remain critical for Australian and South African citrus exports to China and Europe.

Visitors to Stand E10 can participate in an interactive “Reefer Quiz” for a chance to win prizes while learning about the latest technical requirements for the 43+ international markets MSC serves.
