DP World Global Seagrass Restoration Initiative South Korea

DP World has launched its first global seagrass restoration initiative on Geoje Island, marking a new milestone in the company’s environmental sustainability programme.

The four-year project aims to restore 2.4 hectares of coastal seagrass meadows, supporting marine biodiversity, blue carbon ecosystems and local fishing communities.

Partnership to restore coastal ecosystems

The initiative was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between DP World, the Korea Green Foundation and the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency.

The partnership will focus on scientific research, long-term monitoring of seagrass habitats and the development of restoration methods, while encouraging collaboration between government agencies, private organisations and local communities around Dadae Village on Geoje Island.

To mark World Ocean Day, representatives from the three organisations and the local fishing community transplanted approximately 6,000 seagrass shoots along the Dadae coastline. The restoration programme is expected to improve marine habitats while supporting fish populations and the livelihoods of local fishing communities.

Supporting blue carbon ecosystems

Seagrass meadows are recognised as important blue carbon ecosystems due to their ability to absorb and store carbon while providing habitat for a wide range of marine species. They also play a key role in protecting coastlines from erosion and maintaining healthy coastal environments.

The project will include ongoing monitoring and evaluation led by FIRA, alongside community engagement and public awareness activities designed to encourage long-term stewardship of the restored habitat.

Part of a broader sustainability strategy

According to DP World, the Geoje Island initiative builds on its wider environmental programmes across the Asia Pacific region. These include mangrove restoration projects in Indonesia, watershed rehabilitation initiatives in the Philippines and coral reef restoration programmes in Australia.

Through partnerships with governments, non-governmental organisations and local communities, the company said it aims to support long-term environmental conservation while contributing to the resilience of the coastal ecosystems in which it operates.
