Ocean container shipping line Orient Overseas Container Line Ltd. (OOCL) marked a major sustainability milestone as its first methanol dual-fuel containership, the OOCL Wisdom, completed its initial green methanol bunkering and officially commenced its maiden voyage at Qingdao Port.
With a nominal carrying capacity of 24,168 TEU, the OOCL Wisdom takes the lead as the world’s largest methanol dual-fuel container vessel. The ship is the first of seven planned 24,000 TEU-class methanol dual-fuel sister vessels ordered by OOCL to support its long-term fleet modernization and maritime decarbonization strategy.
Strategic Deployment on Asia–North Europe LL1 Trade Corridor
Following the bunkering operation, the mega-vessel entered active commercial rotation on OOCL’s high-volume Asia–North Europe Loop 1 (LL1) service, connecting major manufacturing hubs in East Asia with key European consumer markets.
The deployment of methanol dual-fuel tonnage on primary East-West trade lanes allows ocean shippers to significantly lower the carbon intensity of their long-haul ocean freight, supporting Scope 3 emission reduction targets across global retail and industrial supply chains.
The event also highlights the expanding green bunkering infrastructure at Qingdao Port, demonstrating the facility’s capability to safely handle alternative marine fuels like green methanol alongside traditional low-sulfur oil products.
Peter Pan, Director of Trades at OOCL, noted that completing the green methanol bunkering and launching the vessel’s maiden voyage to Europe represents a major result of the deepening operational collaboration between OOCL and Shandong Port Group. He emphasized that the milestone reflects OOCL’s commitment to low-carbon development and digital intelligence, adding that the carrier will continue upgrading its fleet to provide safer, more reliable, and environmentally sustainable logistics solutions for global trade.
