A.P. Moller – Maersk has introduced a dedicated lithium-ion battery transportation service across its North American ground freight network, expanding its capabilities to support the growing demand for the safe and compliant movement of Class 9 batteries.
The new service is designed to support industries including automotive, electric vehicles (EVs) and advanced manufacturing, where demand for specialist battery logistics continues to increase.
Supporting the Energy Transition
According to Maersk, the new capability extends its dangerous goods expertise from ocean and air freight into over-the-road transport, providing integrated logistics support for North America’s rapidly expanding battery supply chain.
The company said the service is intended to strengthen logistics infrastructure supporting the transition towards electrified transport by providing specialist handling for lithium-ion battery shipments across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Focus on Safety and Compliance
The battery transport programme has been developed around strict safety and regulatory requirements.
The service is limited to new lithium-ion batteries and excludes damaged, defective, recalled, returned or waste batteries.
Shipments must comply with documentation requirements, including Safety Data Sheets (SDS), Dangerous Goods Declarations, UN 38.3 Test Summaries, State of Charge (SOC) declarations and watt-hour ratings. Battery charge levels are required to remain between 10% and 60% during transport.
The network is supported by hazardous materials-trained drivers and compliance procedures tailored to regulatory requirements in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Expanding Ground Freight Capabilities
Maersk said the new service reflects growing customer demand for specialised ground transportation solutions as battery production and electric vehicle manufacturing continue to expand across North America.
By integrating lithium-ion battery transport into its ground freight network, the company aims to provide customers with a compliant and scalable logistics solution supporting the movement of critical components throughout the regional supply chain.
