Global logistics provider deugro has officially launched a coordinated river cleanup and waste management initiative in the Bekasi Regency. In a strategic partnership with the German NGO One Earth – One Ocean (OEOO) and the Indonesian social enterprise Waste4Change (W4C), the project aims to rehabilitate critical sections of the CBL River, a major waterway in the Jakarta metropolitan area that has long struggled with severe plastic pollution.

The initiative combines deugro’s logistics expertise with innovative German engineering and local waste-processing capabilities to stop the flow of plastic from rivers into the ocean.

Cutting-Edge Tech: The Sea Hamster 2.0

At the heart of the operation is the Sea Hamster 2.0, a new-generation, solar-powered waste collection vessel. Unlike traditional diesel-powered boats, this low-emission catamaran is specifically designed for shallow inland waters and narrow riverbanks.

System Features:

  • Zero-Emission Propulsion: Fully electric motors powered by integrated photovoltaic panels ensure the cleanup process itself has a neutral carbon footprint.
  • Hybrid Collection: The vessel uses a combination of adjustable ramps, conveyor belts, and large collection baskets to capture floating debris and “carpet” waste.
  • Floating Barriers: Strategically placed pontoons and barriers channel waste toward the Sea Hamster, increasing collection efficiency in high-current zones.
  • Operational Capacity: The Sea Hamster 2.0 can collect between 50 to 300 kg of waste per day, depending on river conditions.

Beyond Collection: A Circular Economy Model

A critical differentiator of the Bekasi project is its focus on the “after-life” of the collected waste. Once the Sea Hamster delivers its haul to the base camp—a converted shipping container facility on the riverbank—the process transitions to Waste4Change:

  • Sorting & Recycling: Waste is meticulously sorted into recyclables (PET, HDPE) and non-recyclables.
  • Value Creation: Recyclable materials are fed back into the local circular economy, while non-recyclables are managed responsibly to prevent them from returning to the environment.
  • Local Employment: The project has created permanent jobs for Bekasi residents, who are trained in vessel operation, waste sorting, and technical maintenance.

A Global Commitment to Local Action

For deugro, the Bekasi initiative is a key pillar of its broader 2026 sustainability agenda. Sari Safianti, deugro’s Country Manager in Jakarta, noted that “meaningful progress depends on collaboration.” By funding the removal and recycling of waste from a specific river section, deugro is translating its logistical strengths into tangible social and environmental value.

This project follows deugro’s long-standing history of humanitarian support, including its fundraising partnership with CARE, and serves as a replicable model for other high-pollution river systems across Southeast Asia.
