Westports Malaysia, one of Southeast Asia’s primary mega-transshipment hubs, has signed a landmark agreement with WESTWELL to deploy 60 intelligent, new-energy heavy-duty trucks. This order—one of the largest of its kind in the region—marks a significant leap in Westports’ journey toward a fully electrified terminal and reinforces Port Klang’s status as a leader in green maritime logistics.
The deal includes 60 self-developed E-Trucks integrated with WESTWELL’s PowerOnair autonomous battery-swapping stations, providing a complete smart-energy ecosystem for the terminal’s daily operations.
Powering the Future of Port Klang
Westports is currently undergoing a massive expansion aimed at nearly doubling its annual capacity from 14 million to 27 million TEUs. This green fleet renewal is a core component of that expansion, ensuring that as volume grows, carbon intensity falls.
The Intelligent Fleet Advantage:
- Zero Emissions: The E-Trucks feature pure electric propulsion with a 282kWh high-capacity battery, offering a 150km range with zero tailpipe emissions and significantly reduced noise pollution.
- 5-Minute Refueling: The PowerOnair smart battery-swap stations allow for fully automated battery exchanges in under five minutes, matching the refueling speed of traditional diesel trucks while eliminating downtime.
- Smart Scheduling: WESTWELL’s CSS Charging Management System uses AI to optimize vehicle charging sequences, reducing waiting times and maximizing fleet uptime.
A Long-Standing Strategic Alliance
The partnership between the two companies is well-established. In 2022, Westports successfully commissioned WESTWELL’s Q-Truck (fully autonomous trucks), leading to WESTWELL being named “Best Automation Equipment Partner” during Westports’ 30th Anniversary in 2024.
Datuk Ruben Emir Gnanalingam, Executive Chairman of Westports, noted that this deployment paves the way for the full electrification of the upcoming CT10 to CT17 terminal expansion. By integrating these innovative technologies, Westports aims to enhance operational efficiency while meeting its ambitious ESG targets.
Localized Support for Global Standards
To ensure the long-term sustainability of the project, WESTWELL has established a localized operational model in Malaysia. This includes a dedicated maintenance team and a regional parts center to provide end-to-end service throughout the E-Trucks’ lifecycle.
Kenny Tan, Founder and Chairman of WESTWELL, emphasized that the company is committed to using AI and new energy to develop tailored logistics solutions that meet the specific business scenarios of their clients, supporting the “intelligent and green transformation” of ports globally.
