APM Terminals has officially broken ground on its new Laldia container terminal in Chattogram, Bangladesh, marking the start of construction on a USD 550 million public-private partnership project.
The development is being delivered in partnership with the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) and local partner QNS Container Services Ltd. It also forms part of a Government-to-Government partnership between Bangladesh and Denmark aimed at attracting investment and expertise into the country’s trade infrastructure.
Expanding Port Capacity
Scheduled to become operational in 2030, APM Terminals Laldia will add more than 800,000 TEUs of annual handling capacity to Bangladesh’s port system.
The terminal is designed with a deeper draft and extended quay, enabling Chattogram to accommodate container vessels of up to 6,000 TEUs, compared with the current limit of approximately 2,800 TEUs.
The additional capacity is expected to help ease congestion, improve vessel turnaround times and strengthen supply chain reliability for Bangladesh’s key export industries, including textiles, apparel and manufacturing.
Public-Private Partnership Model
Under the project structure, APM Terminals and its partners will design, finance, build and operate the facility, while ownership of the port asset will remain with Bangladesh.
The model represents a significant private-sector investment in the country’s maritime infrastructure while maintaining public ownership of the strategic asset.
Supporting Jobs and Lower-Emission Operations
The project is expected to create more than 1,000 jobs during construction and over 500 positions once operations begin, alongside additional employment across logistics and related industries.
APM Terminals also plans to introduce training and apprenticeship programmes to support the development of local maritime skills.
The terminal will incorporate electrified cargo-handling equipment, solar power and shore-power-ready infrastructure as part of efforts to reduce emissions, noise and air pollution.
According to APM Terminals, these capabilities will also support Bangladeshi exporters as international customers place greater emphasis on lower-carbon supply chains and environmental performance.
