Forum at LISW25 Spotlights Chinese Industry’s Achievements and Proposes Three Initiatives for Global Green Transition
COSCO SHIPPING and China Classification Society (CCS) jointly hosted a high-level forum on September 16 at the London International Shipping Week 2025 (LISW25). The event, themed “Green and Smart Solutions for a Safe, Sustainable and Efficient Shipping Industry,” showcased the Chinese shipping industry’s latest technologies and practical achievements in green and smart development, underscoring its global vision in advancing the “dual transformation” of digital intelligence and green low-carbon operations.
Mr. Zhu Bixin, Director of the Board and President of COSCO SHIPPING, attended LISW and delivered a keynote speech. He affirmed COSCO SHIPPING’s commitment to integrating ESG principles into its global operations and providing customers with safe, efficient, and sustainable services.
Global Initiatives for Sustainable Shipping
Mr. Zhu Bixin proposed three key initiatives for the sustainable development of the global shipping industry:
- Promoting Regulatory Uniformity: Firmly supporting the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) net-zero framework to establish a fair, efficient, clear, and definitive regulatory environment for the industry’s green transformation.
- Increasing Green Energy Investment: Proposing the joint establishment of a dedicated fund for green shipping energy, supporting cross-border demonstration projects, and overcoming energy supply bottlenecks to accelerate large-scale application of green fuels. Over one-third of COSCO SHIPPING’s new vessels are already powered by new energy fuels, and the company has already launched a green shipping energy fund.
- Advancing Digital Green Transition: Calling for the creation of a blockchain-based carbon footprint certification platform to cover the entire lifecycle of green fuels, ensuring data immutability, traceability, and auditability from production to combustion. The existing GSBN platform, under COSCO SHIPPING, is prepared to collaborate with international institutions to standardize global green certification data.
Technological Advancements and UK Highlights
The forum featured in-depth discussions among representatives from international maritime regulatory authorities, industry organizations, and leading enterprises. COSCO SHIPPING presented an integrated “shipping + port + logistics” green and smart supply chain solution, noting that its operational efficiency has been enhanced through the application of blockchain and AI technologies. CCS showcased its developments, including the formulation of over 30 green and digital ship standards and the establishment of a zero-carbon shipping innovation laboratory.
During the event, COSCO SHIPPING (UK) released its ESG Highlights, detailing localized efforts such as the green smart flagship warehouse project by Crystal Logistics at the Freeport of London Gateway Port. This facility achieved a 40% reduction in carbon emissions and earned a BREEAM “Outstanding” rating through photovoltaic power generation and intelligent systems. Furthermore, its subsidiary, Multimodal Logistics Ltd (MML), is advancing fleet electrification and smart fleet management, achieving an energy efficiency improvement of approximately 8%.
Industry insiders expressed plans for China and Europe to strengthen cooperation in green fuel R&D, intelligent vessel demonstration, and carbon footprint certification, with the first cooperation outcomes planned for announcement at MARINTEC CHINA 2026.
