Strategic Partnership Aims to Establish Onne Port as Nigeria’s First Green Port
APM Terminals’ West African Container Terminal (WACT) in Onne and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) have entered into a strategic partnership to accelerate decarbonization across Nigeria’s port and transport ecosystem. This commitment was formalized with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Monday, September 22, at the Dutch Consulate in New York during the Global African Business Initiative.
The MoU establishes a roadmap for electrifying containerized freight, aligning with the policies set by the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy in Nigeria. The entire collaboration, valued at $60 million USD, will be wholly funded by APM Terminals.
Decarbonization Goals and Regional Leadership
The partnership is focused on transforming the sector and positioning Nigeria as a leader in low-carbon logistics.
Frederik Klinke, CEO of APM Terminals Nigeria, stated that Nigeria is ideally situated to lead West Africa’s transition to low-carbon logistics by electrifying its container transport sector. He expressed optimism that the country, as Africa’s largest economy and trade hub, can leapfrog fossil-fuel infrastructure and adopt proven electric technologies.
The Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, noted that this development will make the Onne Port the first green port in Nigeria, thereby promoting decarbonization efforts within the transportation ecosystem. Dr. Dantsoho also expressed hope that this agreement will serve as a model for other African countries to replicate, solidifying Nigerian ports’ leadership in sustainable port operations on the continent.
