CMA CGM Group has been named a global partner of the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC-3), which will be held in Nice, France, from 9 to 13 June 2025. Co-hosted by France and Costa Rica, the event aims to unite governments, businesses, scientists and civil society in a global push to protect and sustainably manage the world’s oceans.
For the global shipping and logistics group, the partnership marks another milestone in its long-standing efforts to champion maritime decarbonisation and biodiversity conservation. The UNOC partnership aligns with CMA CGM’s broader mission to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and further supports its initiatives to safeguard ocean health through technology, investment, and public-private cooperation.
UNOC 2025 follows previous editions in New York (2017) and Lisbon (2022), and will focus on ratifying the BBNJ (Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction) treaty, protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030, curbing overfishing, and accelerating the decarbonisation of maritime transport.
A vocal advocate for sustainable shipping practices, CMA CGM has invested heavily in low-carbon technologies. It currently operates one of the largest LNG-powered fleets in the world and plans to deploy 153 low-carbon vessels by 2029. In 2019, the company made headlines when it chose to avoid the Northern Sea Route to protect fragile Arctic ecosystems, despite the route’s commercial advantages.
The group continues to retrofit its existing fleet and has committed to new-generation vessels powered by LNG and methanol. It is also actively developing sustainable marine fuels and using artificial intelligence to optimise vessel operations through its SmartShip programme and Fleet Center. On land, CMA CGM supports projects such as the Thassalia geothermal marine energy network in Marseille and has introduced electric river barges in Vietnam to reduce emissions across inland logistics corridors.
During UNOC-3, CMA CGM will participate in major panels and side events covering maritime innovation, participatory ocean science, and blue economy strategies. The group will also contribute to the “Maritime Decarbonization” pavilion, housed in a 200-square-metre public space dubbed La Baleine, showcasing industry progress on net zero shipping and marine biodiversity.
Biodiversity conservation remains central to CMA CGM’s environmental approach. The group is involved in habitat restoration initiatives across the Mediterranean, including the installation of Biohuts in Marseille and Khalifa Port in partnership with Ecocean, as well as clean-up activities and rehabilitation works in Calanques National Park. Through its corporate foundation, CMA CGM also promotes environmental education for youth and supports turtle conservation and reforestation efforts in overseas territories and parts of Africa.
As part of its innovation pipeline, the company is collaborating with startups such as Aerleum and ZERO44—winners of the CMA CGM Startup Awards—to advance technologies that support measurable decarbonisation across the supply chain.
CMA CGM’s partnership with UNOC-3 reinforces its growing influence as a sustainability leader in the maritime sector, bridging policy, innovation, and logistics to drive ocean-positive outcomes.
