Yang Ming "YM Willpower" Historic First LNG Bunkering Singapore

Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation (Yang Ming) has reached a significant milestone in its energy transition strategy with the successful LNG bunkering of its new 15,500 TEU vessel, YM Willpower. In collaboration with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and Shell Eastern Trading, the vessel received approximately 3,500 metric tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) at the Singapore anchorage on February 26.

This operation marks the first time a Yang Ming vessel has bunkered LNG in Singapore, providing the primary fuel for its entire current voyage on the Far East–Mediterranean MD2 service.

Advancing the Low-Carbon Fleet

The YM Willpower is the lead ship in a new series of 15,500 TEU class dual-fuel container vessels being progressively introduced into Yang Ming’s operating fleet throughout 2026. These vessels represent a concrete step toward the company’s net-zero goals, offering immediate and measurable environmental benefits compared to conventional marine fuels.

Environmental Impact of LNG Adoption:

  • Carbon Dioxide (CO₂): Reduced by approximately 20%.
  • Sulfur Oxides (SOx): Reduced by approximately 99%.
  • Particulate Matter: Reduced by approximately 85%.

The successful coordination between Yang Ming, the MPA, and Shell ensured that the bunkering was completed under stringent safety protocols, allowing the vessel to proceed directly to berth for efficient cargo operations and depart at full load.

“YM ECO Sea”: A Green Solution for Shippers

Alongside the rollout of LNG-powered ships, Yang Ming has launched its green transportation solution, “YM ECO Sea.” This initiative is designed to help customers manage their Scope 3 supply chain emissions through a verified carbon accounting framework.

  • Book and Claim Mechanism: Verified CO₂ reductions achieved through alternative fuels (LNG and sustainable biofuels) are quantified and allocated to participating customers.
  • Global Standards: The program’s methodology complies with EU RED II requirements and the GLEC Framework, ensuring that carbon disclosures are internationally recognized.
  • Fleet-Wide Upgrades: In addition to new LNG vessels, Yang Ming continues to install energy-saving equipment and software-driven data optimizations across its conventionally fueled fleet.

Future-Ready Maritime Operations

The successful bunkering of the YM Willpower serves as a professional benchmark for the remaining sister vessels in the 15,500 TEU series. By implementing a diversified fuel strategy—combining LNG, biofuels, and hardware efficiency—Yang Ming is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable maritime transport.

As more dual-fuel vessels enter service throughout 2026, the company aims to harmonize global trade growth with long-term environmental sustainability, providing shippers with a reliable, low-carbon gateway to international markets.
