Pacific International Lines 13000 TEU LNG Dual-Fuel Container Vessels

Singapore-based ocean carrier Pacific International Lines (PIL) has formally named its two newest 13,000 TEU container vessels, the Kota Elok and Kota Elan, during a twin naming ceremony held at the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard in Shanghai. The delivery marks the first operational milestone in PIL’s multi-year fleet renewal program, which encompasses a 13-ship series of identical ultra-large neo-Panamax vessels.

The newly commissioned sister ships are slated for immediate deployment along PIL’s trade lane linking major container gateways in Asia directly with South America—a high-yield maritime corridor experiencing sustained cargo volume growth.

Ceremonial Sponsorship and Fleet Decarbonization

The twin christening event brought together executives from international finance, manufacturing, and heavy shipbuilding sectors. The Kota Elok (meaning “beautiful city” in Malay) was sponsored and named by Ms. Chan Wai Ching, Chief Corporate Officer of Temasek International. The Kota Elan (derived from the French term for vitality or momentum) was named by Ms. Yan Zi, a former Olympic tennis medalist and Grand Slam doubles champion.

The primary structural evolution of this newbuild series is the integration of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) dual-fuel propulsion systems. Both vessels are engineered to operate interchangeably on LNG or low-sulfur fuel oil (LSFO), allowing commercial shippers to secure immediate reductions in sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter, while cutting lifecycle carbon dioxide emissions. The asset investments serve as a foundational pillar for PIL’s stated corporate compliance strategy to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Hydrodynamic Engineering and Aerodynamic Efficiencies

To maximize fuel efficiency over long-haul transpacific loops, the vessels incorporate a series of advanced maritime design characteristics:

  • Optimized Hull Geometries: Refined underwater lines to enhance hydrodynamic performance, minimizing wave-making resistance at standard cruising speeds.
  • Aerodynamic Bow Windshield: Specially fitted on the Kota Elok, this structural shield deflects head-winds over the forward container stacks, significantly lowering aerodynamic drag and reducing fuel burn during adverse open-ocean weather conditions.
  • Premium Eco-Coatings: The hull surfaces are treated with advanced anti-fouling coatings that prevent marine growth, keeping the hull smooth and reducing frictional resistance through the water.

Embedded IoT Automation and Seafarer Welfare

Beyond traditional mechanical components, the Kota Elok and Kota Elan feature a highly digitalized operational framework. The ships are equipped with interconnected Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and onboard Artificial Intelligence (AI) telemetry modules. These systems continuously track engine performance, fuel efficiency parameters, and optimal navigational routing in real time, communicating data instantly back to ground control center teams. This digital infrastructure supports higher onboard automation, enabling predictive maintenance schedules and reducing unexpected mechanical downtime.

Lars Kastrup, CEO of PIL, stated that the naming of these vessels underscores the acceleration of the company’s fleet modernization and its efforts to reinforce its positioning across core global trade routes. He emphasized that the introduction of the 13,000 TEU series expands capacity and delivers enhanced operating efficiencies for customers, while the investments in LNG dual-fuel technology represent clear steps toward mitigating PIL’s environmental footprint.

The internal configuration of the ships also emphasizes crew welfare, offering enhanced safety measures, improved insulation to minimize machinery vibration, and modern living quarters designed to support seafarer mental and physical well-being over extended blue-water shifts.
