At 9:00 a.m. on December 25, 2022, OOCL HO CHI MINH CITY sailed into Berth No.9 of Guangzhou Nansha Port Phase II, loaded with 280 units or 7,500 tons of fresh Chilean cherries. It was the first liner launched by COSCO SHIPPING under its end-to-end logistics service program for Chilean cherry imports. Trailers operated by COSCO SHIPPING Lines South China continued shuttling between Nansha Port and Jiangnan Fruit Market to deliver boxes of cherries to the merchants.

Cherries are one of the most representative fruits from Chile. As non-respiratory climacteric fruits, cherries are not suitable for storage, with extremely high requirements for transportation. Before being put into the market, cherries should be picked, checked for quality and then packaged and transported through the cold chain. When entering China, the reefers must be subject to strict sterilization and inspection at customs.

On top of the “cherry express,” the transportation of cherries also poses a challenge to the shipper to cut the time needed in the logistics procedures at the port of destination.

To meet the special needs of cherry transportation, great efforts were made in various links from COSCO SHIPPING Lines through CSP Nansha Terminal. After receiving the shipping schedule of the cherry express, the terminal began to prepare the best berthing and unloading plan, arranged the inspection site in advance and opened a green channel for customs inspection and release. Meanwhile, Nansha Port Phase II cooperated with the Nansha Customs, together with COSCO SHIPPING, shipping agents and truck fleets, to develop a safe and efficient customs clearance plan for the unloading of cherries so as to ensure that the fruit arrived at the Guangzhou Jiangnan Fruit Wholesale Market in the freshest state.

Compared with 2021, the export volume of Chilean cherries is expected to increase by 40% year-over-year in 2022. In the 2022-2023 cherry season, COSCO SHIPPING Container Lines has launched three groups of 11 shipping routes for the “cherry express,” with direct ports of call covering Shanghai, Nansha, Hong Kong, and Shekou. The cherry express, empowered by COSCO SHIPPING Holdings’ industry-leading SmartReefer fleets, MyReefer platform and digital one-stop platform SynConHub, will be able to provide intelligent transportation services for Chilean cherries from across the ocean.
