Yang Ming Six Methanol Dual-Fuel-Ready Containerships

8,000 TEU Vessels Scheduled for Delivery Starting in 2028 as Part of Fleet Optimization and Decarbonization Strategy

Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation (Yang Ming) has signed comprehensive contracts for six 8,000 TEU-class container vessels with methanol dual-fuel-ready specifications. The agreements were finalized yesterday (28th) with Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd., Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., and Shoei Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. at Imabari International Hotel.

The contracts, signed by Dr. Chuck Tsai, Chairman of Yang Ming, and Mr. Yukito Higaki, Director of Nihon Shipyard, include the purchase of three containerships and newbuilding orders for another three. These vessels are scheduled for delivery starting in 2028, marking a crucial step in Yang Ming’s fleet optimization plan to secure mid- to long-term capacity and strengthen its global service network.

Advancing Decarbonization and Operational Efficiency

These 8,000 TEU vessels represent the first batch in Yang Ming’s fleet designed to be adaptable for methanol dual-fuel use. Upon delivery, the new vessels will gradually replace the company’s current 5,500 TEU-class containerships that have been in service for over 20 years.

The newbuildings feature advanced energy-efficient designs to enhance competitiveness and operational flexibility while contributing to continuous carbon intensity reduction in compliance with international environmental regulations.

Key features supporting the sustainability and efficiency goals include:

  • Fuel Readiness: The main engine design is prepared for future conversion to use green methanol fuel, providing flexibility as green methanol technologies evolve.
  • Propulsion Optimization: The vessels will feature a high-efficiency propeller, an energy-saving rudder, and a rudder fin to further optimize hydrodynamic performance and fuel consumption.

Through this long-standing collaboration with Nihon Shipyard, Imabari Shipbuilding, and Shoei Kisen, Yang Ming continues to advance ship decarbonization technologies. The company is committed to monitoring market dynamics and regulatory developments to build a comprehensive global transport network and provide customers with safe, reliable, and low-carbon transportation services.
