HMM has announced the launch of its new Gulf – India – East Africa (GIA) Service, a container feeder route connecting Indian trade hubs with primary gateways in East Africa.
The service is scheduled to commence operations in the fourth week of September 2026, marking HMM’s second dedicated African feeder loop under its Hub & Spoke strategy.
Service Structure and Carrier Alliance
Operating as a joint service among four global carriers—HMM, COSCO SHIPPING, PIL, and Interasia Lines—the service will deploy five 2,800 TEU container vessels, with future plans to extend the rotation into the Gulf region.
Key operational details include:
- Port Rotation: Nhava Sheva (India) – Mundra (India) – Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) – Mombasa (Kenya) – Nhava Sheva (India).
- Cargo Consolidation Hubs: Integrates West Indian ports of Nhava Sheva and Mundra to handle cargo originating from India and Central Asia.
- Gateway Access: Connects directly with Tanzania and Kenya, providing access to developing inland logistics networks across East Africa.
Strategic Regional Expansion
Building upon its existing West Africa (MA2) coverage, the introduction of the GIA loop expands HMM’s overall network across the African continent.
An HMM official highlighted that the joint service aims to enhance transit efficiency and schedule reliability while positioning the carrier for future service expansions in the region.
