CMA CGM Adds Port to FAL1 Service, Boosting Swedish Industry Competitiveness and Sustainability
APM Terminals Gothenburg will, for the first time in its history, receive three weekly mainline calls providing direct services to Asia. This significant development strengthens the reliability, frequency, and sustainability of the flow of goods between Sweden and Asia.
The French shipping giant CMA CGM is behind this historic expansion, adding Gothenburg as a new port of call on its FAL1 (French Asia Line) Asia–Europe service, which commenced at the end of October. The FAL1 line directly connects Gothenburg with some of the world’s largest ports in China, South Korea, Singapore, and major ports across Europe.
Mikael Gutman, Managing Director of APM Terminals Gothenburg, stated: “This is a clear indication that the Port of Gothenburg is a highly prioritized hub on the global trade map. Three strong weekly alternatives for direct services to Asia significantly strengthen the competitiveness of Swedish industry, providing faster lead times and access to new, exciting markets.”
Linus Ljungmark, Agency General Manager at CMA CGM Sweden, confirmed the move was customer-driven: “Our customers remain our biggest focus and they have been requesting this call for a long time, I am happy that we are now able to meet their request.”
A Step Toward Climate-Efficient Shipping
The new service is also positioned as an advance in climate-efficient shipping. One of the vessels deployed in the FAL1 service, the 366-meter-long CMA CGM Symi, is powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). LNG is a transitional fuel that significantly reduces emissions compared to conventional marine diesel.
Jonatan Östberg, Chief Commercial Officer at CMA CGM Sweden, highlighted the environmental benefit: “The CMA CGM Symi is a testament to our commitment to further accelerate the decarbonization of transport and logistics. With this call we are able to offer our Swedish customers shipping solutions with significantly reduced emissions.”
Mikael Gutman noted that the trend of major shipping lines investing in alternative fuels, combined with the port’s extensive climate-efficient rail connections to the rest of the Nordic region, helps create “one of Europe’s most sustainable logistics chains.”
