Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) has once again been recognized for its industry-leading sustainability efforts, receiving the Gold Award in the Transport and Logistics sector at the Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence (HKAEE). This marks the fifth time OOCL has attained the top honor, reinforcing its position as a pioneer in green maritime operations.

The HKAEE is a highly prestigious recognition organized by the Environmental Campaign Committee (ECC) and the Environment and Ecology Bureau. OOCL was selected based on its performance in three rigorous criteria: green leadership, program performance, and partner synergy.

A Multidimensional Strategy for Net-Zero

OOCL’s success is built upon a governance structure that integrates climate action into core business decisions. Guided by a Board-level Sustainability Committee, the company has implemented several high-impact initiatives to drive its decarbonization roadmap:

  • Future-Proofing the Fleet: The company is currently investing in 21 methanol dual-fuel vessels, representing a combined capacity of 427,000 TEU. These next-generation ships are designed to be at least 52% more efficient than the maximum Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) set by the IMO.
  • AI-Driven Optimization: OOCL leverages its Global Vessel Voyage Monitoring Centre (GVVMC), which uses advanced AI tools to optimize vessel speeds, weather routing, and bunker consumption in real-time.
  • Customer-Centric Green Solutions: Through the OOCL Green service on the FreightSmart platform, the carrier provides shippers with low-carbon supply chain options, allowing businesses to actively reduce their Scope 3 emissions.

Sustainable Growth Through Digital Innovation

During the ceremony at the Data Technology Hub in Tseung Kwan O, OOCL emphasized that long-term competitiveness in the shipping industry is now inseparable from environmental stewardship. By combining digital innovation with fleet modernization, OOCL is not only meeting current regulatory standards but is actively shaping the transition to a net-zero maritime economy.

This fifth Gold Award underscores OOCL’s role as a “green leader” in Hong Kong’s logistics ecosystem, demonstrating that large-scale global trade and responsible business growth can go hand-in-hand.
