Asian Terminals Inc. DP World Deploy Six Hybrid RTG Cranes Manila South Harbour

Port terminal operator Asian Terminals Inc. (ATI) and DP World have commissioned six hybrid Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes at Manila South Harbour (MSH) to expand terminal handling capacity and reduce carbon emissions.

The fleet expansion raises MSH’s total RTG inventory to 29 units, enhancing landside container staging efficiency and accelerating truck turnaround times across the terminal.

Equipment Engineering and Terminal Metrics

The ZPMC-manufactured hybrid RTGs incorporate automation and safety systems designed to improve yard throughput:

  • Stacking and Operational Capabilities: Capable of stacking containers six high, the units integrate automatic gantry steering, anti-sway technology, truck detection, and automated chassis positioning systems.
  • Hybrid and Electrification Design: Features hybrid diesel-electric power systems to cut fuel burn and emissions, built with architectural support for future conversion to fully electric (e-RTG) power.
  • Capacity Context: Follows the early 2025 inauguration of an extended Pier 3 and two mega-quay cranes, which collectively increased MSH’s annual handling capacity from 1.45 million TEUs in 2021 to 2.0 million TEUs.

Fleet Decarbonization and Infrastructure Investments

The deployment forms part of a broader fleet electrification program across ATI and DP World’s Philippine port network:

  • Mobile Fleet Electrification: Complements 15 fully electric Internal Transfer Vehicles (eITVs) deployed at MSH in 2025, supported by dedicated high-speed charging infrastructure.
  • Upcoming Equipment Additions: Scheduled to deploy three electric empty container handlers, two electric reach stackers, and an additional 15 eITVs by the end of 2026.
  • Strategic Network Scope: Aligns with broader capital expenditure initiatives across logistics corridors in Manila, Batangas, Cavite, and Laguna to build resilient Philippine trade infrastructure.

Executive Commentary

William Khoury, DP World APAC Vice President for Ports & Terminals Southeast Asia and ATI Director, noted that the joint investments in cleaner cargo-handling equipment and smart port technologies serve to modernize trade gateways while supporting long-term economic resilience across Philippine supply chains.
