MSC Intermodal Solutions Africa Inland Connectivity

MSC is highlighting its expanded intermodal logistics solutions across Africa, outlining how integrated rail, road and port services are improving inland connectivity and supporting more reliable cargo movements beyond coastal gateways.

Intermodal transport continues to play a key role in reducing transit times, improving supply chain predictability and connecting landlocked markets with global trade routes. MSC said demand for dependable inland logistics is increasing across the continent, with customers seeking more resilient and flexible end-to-end transport options.

Abidjan–Ouagadougou Rail Corridor

The first focus of the campaign examines the rail corridor linking the Port of Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire with Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso. Covering approximately 1,150 to 1,260 kilometres, the route provides an inland alternative to congested road transport and supports freight flows for sectors including agriculture, FMCG, mining and temperature-controlled cargo.

MSC said the corridor offers more consistent transit times, improved cargo security and a stable inland-to-port connection that supports year-round planning.

Broader Intermodal Coverage Across Africa

The campaign also highlights additional corridors where intermodal solutions are supporting inland trade:

  • Cameroon: Infrastructure developments around Kribi Port and upgraded trucking routes improving access to inland markets.
  • South Africa and Namibia: Cross-border trucking services, including reefer transport supported by MSC’s Durban cold-chain facilities.
  • Kenya: Integrated inland-to-port logistics supporting agricultural exports from production areas to export terminals.

According to MSC, these corridors demonstrate how coordinated inland solutions can reduce operational complexity and improve connectivity between inland markets and international trade lanes.

The first video released as part of the series focuses on the Abidjan–Ouagadougou rail solution and includes operational insights from teams on the ground, outlining how customers are using the corridor to support inland supply chains.
