Maersk Integrated Chile-to-U.S. East Coast Cold Chain Solution Regulated Produce

A.P. Moller – Maersk has launched an integrated cold chain solution connecting origin handling in Chile with ocean transportation, port operations, destination fumigation, cold storage, and inland logistics.

Developed in collaboration with fresh produce supplier Oppy and the Port of Wilmington, the end-to-end service targets regulated commodities entering the U.S. Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern markets.

Destination Fumigation Framework and Infrastructure Upgrades

The service framework shifts mandatory USDA pest control treatments to destination, addressing historical capacity bottlenecks and delays at traditional origin or gateway ports:

Port Capacity Expansion: Over a six-month development period, Maersk and port authorities secured additional permits and executed infrastructure upgrades to expand total fumigation throughput at the Port of Wilmington.

Seamless Process Flow: Regulated produce transfers directly from vessel discharge to destination fumigation, then moves immediately into Maersk’s integrated Wilmington cold storage facility for onward inland distribution.

Commodity Scope: Built primarily for Chilean grapes, the expanded setup also accommodates other regulated perishables, including blueberries, asparagus, and citrus fruits.

Pilot Performance and Industry Recognition

The model was operationalized during the 2026 Chilean grape season, deploying weekly ocean sailings tied directly to destination processing and regional distribution via Wilmington.

Pilot evaluations confirmed faster cargo availability and lower overall landed transportation costs compared to traditional entry gateways.

In recognition of the operational setup, the Port of Wilmington presented Maersk and Oppy with a Pioneer Award for their collaborative effort in establishing the supply chain model.
