Indian Container Terminal 30 Konecranes E-Hybrid RTGs Fully Electric Operation

Investment in Advanced Rubber-Tired Gantry Cranes to Set New Benchmarks for Eco-Efficiency in India

A leading greenfield container terminal in India has placed an order for 30 Konecranes Rubber-Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes equipped with the company’s advanced E-Hybrid technology. This major investment is designed to underpin the terminal’s yard operations and drive its eco-efficiency mission, setting new standards for container handling in the country. The order was officially booked in the third quarter of 2025, with delivery scheduled for the first quarter of 2027.

The 30 Konecranes RTGs will run entirely on onboard batteries charged by grid electricity, ensuring zero tailpipe emissions and efficient energy consumption. The terminal has specifically selected a busbar-and-battery configuration for the cranes. This setup allows the RTGs to be fully powered by battery packs, which are dynamically charged by the busbar power supply during operation. A key benefit of this configuration is the ability for the cranes to continue operations even if the grid power is temporarily lost.

Easing Grid Pressure and Reducing Capital Expenditure

Konecranes’ E-Hybrid technology is engineered to significantly reduce the peak power demand for each RTG to only 60 kW, a stark contrast to the up to 400 kW required by traditional electric RTGs. This substantial reduction eases pressure on the local electrical grid and reduces the terminal’s capital expenditure on necessary electrical substations.

Shyam Pathak, Sales Director, Konecranes, Port Solutions, noted that this greenfield project is a major reference point for the maturity of the E-Hybrid technology. He stated that the successful deployment demonstrates that large terminals can now launch with fully electric operations, even when facing challenges related to an unreliable grid supply, thereby setting a new benchmark for terminal design and investment in Ecolifting.

Ecolifting is Konecranes’ overarching vision to maximize the beneficial environmental impact of its product portfolio—known as its “handprint”—while simultaneously reducing customers’ carbon footprints. Konecranes remains committed to leading the material handling industry through digitalization and technology, ensuring its solutions support the decarbonization of the economy and advance both circularity and safety.
