Hutchison Ports Thailand (HPT), the country’s largest container terminal operator at Laem Chabang Port, has surpassed a cumulative throughput of 50 million TEUs since beginning operations in 2002. The milestone reflects more than two decades of expansion across Terminals A2, A3, C1, C2 and D.
Stephen Ashworth, Managing Director of Hutchison Ports Thailand and Southeast Asia, said the achievement demonstrated sustained commitment, innovation and collaboration across the port community. He thanked customers, the Port Authority of Thailand, government agencies, transport contractors and shippers for their continued support.
Next Phase of Development: Terminal D
HPT is preparing to complete the highly automated Terminal D, developed under the Eastern Economic Corridor framework. The facility is scheduled to be fully operational in early 2026 and is intended to increase national logistics capacity while introducing next-generation technologies.
Terminal D will feature a 1,700-metre berth and a depth of 16 metres, enabling accommodation of the world’s largest container vessels. Operations will be supported by digital systems including the n-Gen Terminal Operating System, gate automation and digitalised workflows. Electrically powered and remote-controlled quay cranes and yard cranes, along with autonomous trucks, will form the core of terminal operations.
By early 2026, Terminal D will be equipped with 17 remote-controlled quay cranes, 43 remote-controlled rubber-tyred yard cranes and 10 reach stackers. The facility is expected to handle approximately 3.5 million TEUs annually once fully commissioned.
Automation and Sustainability Initiatives
HPT has also advanced automation with the deployment of autonomous trucks using AI, sensors and 3D mapping technologies. These vehicles operate alongside human-driven electric trucks to enhance efficiency and safety.

Mr Ashworth said the company remained committed to responsible growth, noting that the adoption of electric equipment, autonomous vehicles and digitalised processes would support emissions reduction and contribute to a safer working environment. He added that HPT’s long-term objective is to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
