Global Ro-Ro Community Standardized GHG Emission Calculation

The Global Ro-Ro Community (GRC), a collaborative group comprising Eastern Car Liner Ltd., Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd., Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd., Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha, Wallenius Wilhelmsen ASA, and ClassNK, in conjunction with the international non-profit organization Smart Freight Centre (SFC), has announced new guidelines for calculating greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity for Ro-Ro ships, including car carriers. This initiative aims to advance decarbonization efforts across the global shipping industry.

These guidelines introduce a common calculation methodology, enabling shippers to accurately measure their Scope 3 emissions. This standardization is expected to further accelerate decarbonization efforts within the maritime sector.

Growing interest in carbon emissions throughout the lifecycle of products and services has highlighted challenges in accurately measuring GHG emissions in maritime transport, particularly due to inconsistencies in individual calculation methods. To address this, the six GRC members engaged in open discussions with stakeholders, including shipping companies, shippers, and third-party verification organizations, to develop a standard model for GHG emission calculation, ensuring fairness and transparency.

The standard model adheres to both ISO 14083 and the GLEC (Global Logistics Emissions Council) framework. It was officially unveiled at the SFC annual event, “Smart Freight Week,” held in Amsterdam in March, and is now featured as a set of guidelines on the SFC website.

Looking ahead, the SFC plans to collect actual data on environmental performance on a ship-by-ship basis, with the intention of publishing high-precision average emission intensity data for the industry. This cross-industry initiative represents a crucial first step towards decarbonizing global logistics and is set to contribute significantly to broader efforts against global warming.
