APM Terminals Barcelona and APM Terminals Valencia have joined the Portchain Connect Network, implementing a new digital platform to simplify and standardize the berth alignment process with shipping lines. This move grants the two major Spanish hubs access to a global network used by over 150 terminals worldwide.
By securely sharing schedule data through the platform, both terminals can now provide their carrier customers with earlier and more reliable updates, establishing a single, consistent channel for coordinating berthing. For the terminals themselves, Portchain Connect is designed to reduce manual communication, improve the accuracy of berth plans, and assist planners in boosting overall berth utilization.
This digital integration offers significant benefits for carrier customers, facilitating “Just-in-Time” port calls. This can cut waiting time by an estimated two hours per port call and, on certain voyages, enable fuel savings of up to 10 percent, which directly translates to lower CO2 emissions.
Julián Fernández, APM Terminals Spanish Gateways Managing Director, emphasized the impact of the new system. “Bringing APM Terminals Barcelona and Valencia onto Portchain Connect gives our customers one trusted view of berth windows across both gateways,” he said. “The result is smoother operations for our teams, higher berth efficiency and a more predictable, sustainable supply chain for shipping lines.”
Thor Thorup, CCO and Co-Founder at Portchain, noted the expansion’s importance to the platform’s network. “Adding APM Terminals Barcelona and Valencia to Portchain Connect strengthens our Network in two crucial Mediterranean hubs,” he stated. “Together, we’re improving berth efficiency and cutting emissions for the carriers that call these terminals.”
