DP World, in partnership with VIMC Container Lines Joint Stock Company (VIMC Lines), has launched the Mekong Express, a domestic coastal logistics service designed to strengthen connectivity between Cai Mep and Can Tho in southern Vietnam. The new service, operating twice a week, reduces transit times from 48 hours to just 15 hours—a 70% improvement over existing river routes.
The inaugural voyage of the Mekong Express was marked by a launch ceremony attended by senior officials, including Mr. Eisa Alhammadi, Chargé d’Affaires of the UAE Embassy in Vietnam; Mr. Nguyen Ngoc He, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Can Tho City; and executives from both DP World and VIMC Lines.
The new coastal route is not only faster but also more sustainable. At around 200 kilometres, the distance travelled is significantly shorter than the traditional 367-kilometre inland waterway route, offering cargo owners a more cost-effective and carbon-efficient alternative. The service is capable of transporting several hundred TEUs per trip, including a substantial capacity for refrigerated containers, to support both dry and cold chain logistics.
Plans are already in place to expand the service to include calls at Saigon Premier Container Terminal (SPCT), operated by DP World, and Saigon Hiep Phuoc Port, under the management of VIMC. The service is equipped with real-time digital cargo tracking and carbon monitoring tools, with the partners targeting net-zero carbon emissions by 2026.
“DP World is committed to building a seamless, integrated supply chain ecosystem in Vietnam, an increasingly important hub for Asia Pacific trade,” said Glen Hilton, CEO & Managing Director, Asia Pacific, DP World. “The Mekong Express addresses the growing demand for efficient, reliable and sustainable logistics, supporting economic growth in southern Vietnam and beyond.”
Dr. Le Quang Trung, Deputy CEO of Vietnam Maritime Corporation (VIMC) and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Can Tho Port Joint Stock Company, added: “The Mekong Express represents a significant step forward in domestic logistics efficiency. Our collaboration with DP World underscores our commitment to delivering innovative solutions and strengthening Vietnam’s supply chain resilience.”
Southern Vietnam, home to the Mekong Delta Key Economic Region (MDKER) and the Southern Key Economic Region (SKER), is a critical manufacturing and export hub for the country. By enhancing connectivity between these regions, the Mekong Express is expected to boost Vietnam’s competitiveness in regional and global logistics.
DP World currently operates SPCT in Ho Chi Minh City, which has an annual capacity of 400,000 TEUs and is the only roll-on/roll-off port in southern Vietnam. The company also maintains a corporate office in Ho Chi Minh City and three freight forwarding offices in Can Tho, Haiphong, and Hanoi.
