Yusen Logistics AGL Strategic Joint Venture Kenya

Partnership to Create Regional Gateway for East African Trade

Yusen Logistics Global Management (YLGM) and AGL Kenya, a subsidiary of Africa Global Logistics (AGL), have signed a definitive Joint Venture Agreement (JVA) to establish a new logistics entity in Nairobi. The venture, which received formal regulatory approval in late January 2026, marks a critical expansion for the Yusen Logistics Group into the high-growth East African market.

This collaboration follows a preliminary Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in Paris in April 2025. By combining AGL’s deep-rooted regional expertise with Yusen’s expansive global network, the new company will provide a comprehensive suite of end-to-end services, including international freight forwarding, multimodal transport, contract logistics, and customs brokerage.

Strengthening the East African Trade Corridor

The joint venture is strategically positioned to utilize Kenya as the primary maritime and land gateway for the wider region. The partners intend to focus on several key operational goals:

  • Multimodal Integration: Enhancing sea-to-land connectivity from the Port of Mombasa to landlocked neighboring countries.
  • Supply Chain Resilience: Developing robust contract logistics and warehousing solutions to support manufacturers and traders across East Africa.
  • Global Connectivity: Seamlessly linking African markets to global trade lanes in Asia, Europe, and the Americas through Yusen’s international infrastructure.

A Vision for Sustainable Growth

Hiroyuki Okamoto, President and COO of YLGM, noted that the partnership reflects a shared commitment to building a platform for sustainable growth across the continent. Stanislas de Saint Louvent, CEO of Africa Logistics & Shipping at AGL, added that the venture represents a major milestone in connecting Africa more effectively with the global economy.

The launch of this joint venture aligns with Kenya’s “Vision 2030” objectives, which prioritize the modernization of logistics and infrastructure to drive foreign direct investment. As the new entity begins operations this month, it is expected to create significant opportunities for local businesses and position Kenya as a future hub for global logistics innovation.
