The Global Shipping Business Network (GSBN), in collaboration with IQAX and ICE Digital Trade, has successfully executed a live, cross-platform electronic bill of lading (eBL) transaction involving major financial institutions. This milestone demonstration proves the real-world scalability of digital trade finance, connecting shipping lines, corporates, and banks across different jurisdictions and technology platforms.
The live transaction involved a strategic trade flow between Thailand and China, featuring New Golden Sea Shipping (a COSCO Group subsidiary), Lenzing (Thailand), HSBC Thailand, China Zheshang Bank (CZBank), and Jiangsu Dasheng Group. The process began with New Golden Sea Shipping issuing an eBL to Lenzing Thailand via the IQAX platform. The document was then seamlessly transferred to HSBC Thailand through ICE CargoDocs, presented to CZBank on the same interface, and finally surrendered by Jiangsu Dasheng back through IQAX. This end-to-end flow highlights the successful integration of shipping and banking networks while maintaining legal and operational integrity.
Central to this achievement is GSBN’s blockchain-powered Control Tracking Registry, which ensures the “unicity” of the eBL. This infrastructure guarantees that even as a digital document moves between different providers—such as IQAX and ICE Digital Trade—only one valid original exists at any given time. By aligning a robust legal framework with P&I Club approval and a viable liability structure, the partners have addressed the traditional hurdles to cross-platform interoperability.
Industry leaders noted that this advancement transforms eBLs from simple digital records into sophisticated instruments of value. For manufacturers like Lenzing and century-old enterprises like Jiangsu Dasheng Group, the shift reduces document handling time and operational friction. For global banks like HSBC and CZBank, interoperability provides a trusted pathway to scale trade finance, linking documentation directly to financial rails. This collaboration sets a new benchmark for a frictionless, interconnected digital trade economy.
