DHL Hapag-Lloyd Decarbonize Supply Chains

Partnership Commits to 25,000 Tons CO2e Reduction via Sustainable Marine Fuel “Book and Claim” Mechanism

DHL Global Forwarding and Hapag-Lloyd have achieved a major milestone in their shared efforts to decarbonize maritime supply chains by signing a three-year framework agreement for Scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions. The agreement focuses on deploying sustainable marine fuels within Hapag-Lloyd’s fleet via a “book and claim” chain of custody mechanism.

The collaboration kicked off with the successful execution of an initial order, which saw a reduction of 25,000 tons of CO2e (well-to-wake) in July 2025. The fuel being utilized is a second-generation biofuel produced from waste and residue feedstock, aligning with both companies’ commitment to reducing GHG emissions.

Decoupling Decarbonization from Physical Transport

The core of this partnership centers on the “book and claim” mechanism. This allows customers to purchase sustainable fuel and claim the resulting Scope 3 emission reduction for their transport, even if the physical fuel is used elsewhere in Hapag-Lloyd’s fleet. This approach is critical given the current global limitations in the supply and higher cost of sustainable marine fuels, allowing for faster, early action in industry-wide decarbonization.

Casper Ellerbaek, Head of Global Ocean Freight at DHL Global Forwarding, hailed the agreement as a crucial step toward realizing a shared vision of a decarbonized shipping industry, empowering DHL’s customers to meet their climate goals.

Danny Smolders, Managing Director Global Sales at Hapag-Lloyd, affirmed the feasibility and effectiveness of the strategy: “Partnering with DHL shows how powerful collaboration can be. Together, we are creating real momentum in further decarbonizing supply chains, one bold step at a time.”

Ambitious Corporate Goals

Both global leaders are guided by firm decarbonization commitments:

  • Hapag-Lloyd aims to achieve net-zero fleet emissions by 2045.
  • DHL is striving to reach net-zero GHG emissions by 2050.

DHL’s GoGreen Plus products provide these decarbonized logistics solutions across its core offerings, leveraging sustainable fuels and the “book & claim” approach to help customers reduce their indirect Scope 3 emissions. Hapag-Lloyd has been deploying second-generation biofuels since 2020 and uses its “Ship Green” product to enable customers to claim resulting emission reductions.
