Successful Berthing of MSC DITTE Underscores MIP’s Readiness as a Regional Logistics Hub

Mersin International Port (MIP) marked a historic milestone with the successful berthing of the 400-meter mega container vessel MSC DITTE at its newly completed East Med Hub 2 (EMH2) Terminal. The terminal, which spans 880 meters, successfully accommodated the 19,313 TEU capacity ship, confirming MIP’s readiness to handle the world’s largest vessels.

A welcome ceremony was hosted by MIP General Manager, Ajay Kumar Singh, with attendance from key figures including the Singapore Embassy Chargé d’Affaires, Ann Margaret Mathew, and regional maritime stakeholders.

Strategic Investment for Global Supply Chain Efficiency

Ajay Kumar Singh, General Manager of MIP, emphasised the strategic importance of the event, stating that successfully hosting a vessel of this scale reinforces the port’s strategic role in global trade and its growing importance as a regional logistics hub. He noted that large vessels like the MSC DITTE enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and support sustainability by lowering carbon emissions per container.

The new EMH2 Terminal is equipped with deep quay infrastructure, high-capacity cranes, and advanced digital operations, further strengthening Mersin’s connectivity across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

Uğur Tosuner, MSC Mersin Regional Manager, highlighted Mersin’s role as Türkiye’s most important trade gateway, connecting Anatolia to the world. He confirmed that the MSC DITTE, as part of MSC’s “tiger service,” will provide fast and direct connections to the West Africa and Far East regions. Tosuner also mentioned MSC’s deep belief in Türkiye, symbolised by the naming of the world’s largest vessel, the ‘MSC TÜRKİYE,’ in honour of the Republic’s 100th anniversary, and expressed hope that the vessel would soon visit MIP.

Ann Margaret Mathew, Singapore Embassy Chargé d’Affaires, stated that the EMH2 Terminal’s completion is a key contributor to strengthening economic development links and a robust global supply chain. She affirmed that the investment symbolises PSA’s (Port of Singapore Authority) commitment to MIP’s future and Singapore’s confidence in Türkiye’s long-term growth prospects, noting that MIP is also investing in Türkiye’s youth through the Global Management Association (GMAP) program.
