COSCO SHIPPING has officially taken delivery of the M.V. COSCO SHIPPING YANGPU, a 16,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ship. Delivered by COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry Yangzhou on June 20, the vessel marks a triple breakthrough for China, representing the first such ship ordered by a Chinese owner, delivered by a Chinese shipyard, and equipped with a domestically produced methanol engine. This achievement positions China as a key provider of solutions for the global shipping industry’s green and low-carbon transition.

A New Standard for Green Shipping

The M.V. COSCO SHIPPING YANGPU has a length of 366 meters and a capacity of 16,136 TEUs. It is equipped with an 11,000 cubic meter methanol storage tank, allowing it to complete a one-way voyage from the Far East to the U.S. East Coast without needing to refuel. The ship’s Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) has met the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Phase III standards, with a 54.4% reduction from the baseline. When operating on green methanol, the vessel is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 120,000 tons annually, a figure equivalent to the carbon sequestration of planting 6.7 million trees.

The ship’s dual-fuel system, which includes a domestically produced engine, boiler, and generator set, allows for flexible switching between fuel modes. This design, along with safety features like a unique methanol fuel tank configuration, demonstrates a focus on both operational efficiency and safety.

Advancements in Smart Technology

In addition to its environmental features, the vessel incorporates advanced digital and smart technologies. Its streamlined hull design and high-efficiency propellers are engineered to reduce hydrodynamic resistance. The ship is also equipped with the world’s largest-capacity permanent magnet shaft generator, which reduces maintenance costs. The onboard intelligent system provides functions such as route optimization, equipment health monitoring, and structural safety warnings, all based on real-time data analysis to enhance overall operational management.
