CEVA Logistics has officially integrated wind-powered maritime transport into its FORPLANET suite of low-carbon solutions. This innovative offering, announced last month, allows shippers to reduce CO₂e emissions by up to 90% compared to conventional ocean freight.
By partnering with leading wind-propulsion carriers, CEVA is now providing regular transatlantic connections between Europe and the Americas, proving that renewable energy is no longer a niche concept but a scalable reality for global supply chains.
Low-Carbon Transatlantic Corridors
The new services cater to a wide range of cargo types, including palletized goods, temperature-controlled freight, and oversized industrial equipment. By utilizing secondary ports, CEVA often achieves quicker port operations, keeping end-to-end transit times competitive with traditional fuel-powered vessels.
Key Available Routes:
- France to North America: Fécamp or Saint-Malo to New York and Baltimore; Saint-Nazaire to Halifax.
- France to South America: Fécamp to São Sebastião, Brazil.
- French West Indies: Direct links from Fécamp and Saint-Malo to Pointe-à-Pitre.
Transit times across these routes range from 10 to 18 days, depending on the specific destination and wind conditions, offering a reliable middle ground for shippers who prioritize sustainability without sacrificing the predictability of their supply chain.
End-to-End “Green” Logistics
To ensure the environmental benefits extend beyond the ocean voyage, CEVA combines these wind-powered sailings with low-emission “last mile” solutions. This includes:
- Multimodal Pre-Carriage: Utilizing rail and barge to move goods from inland factories to the departure ports of Fécamp and Saint-Nazaire.
- Low-Emission Trucking: Deploying electric or HVO-powered (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) trucks for final delivery in North and South America.
- Circular Economy Integration: Offering reusable packaging and reverse logistics as part of the broader FORPLANET ecosystem.
A Strategic Step Toward Net Zero 2050
The inclusion of wind propulsion is a core pillar of CEVA’s CSR strategy, “Acting for the Planet.” As maritime regulations tighten globally, wind power offers a unique advantage by utilizing a free, inexhaustible energy source that significantly lowers the carbon intensity of every nautical mile.
Benoît Tinetti, Global CSR Director at CEVA Logistics, emphasized that it is the company’s responsibility to “promote innovative solutions and integrate transport options that contribute to the decarbonization of our customers’ supply chains.”
