CEVA Logistics and Avolta have launched a new pilot project focused on sustainable road transport. The initiative uses three Duo Trailers fueled by Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) along the main transport corridor connecting Barcelona and Madrid. The program, which began in April, is expected to reduce up to 520 tons of CO₂ and 180 kilograms of nitrogen oxide emissions annually, the equivalent of removing 440 conventional trucks from the road.
The pilot aims to measure the real-world impact of the solution and evaluate its potential for expansion across Spain.
Combining Innovative Technology and Renewable Fuel
The Duo Trailers are freight vehicles composed of a single tractor unit pulling two semi-trailers. This configuration allows for a combined load of up to 70 tons per trip, significantly reducing the number of vehicles required for transport. The use of HVO, a renewable fuel produced from vegetable oil or recycled fats, further contributes to the environmental benefits by reducing emissions without requiring engine modifications.
According to Jaume Capdevila, Head of Ground & Rail at CEVA Logistics, the project demonstrates that significant reductions in the carbon footprint of road transport are achievable.
Supporting a Sustainable Future
The Duo Trailers operate three days a week, while standard vehicles, also powered by HVO, handle the remaining days. Avolta’s Transport and Trade Compliance Manager, Pablo García Cupé, stated that the partnership reflects the company’s commitment to selecting more sustainable options for its operations.
The pilot is part of a broader effort to advance more efficient and environmentally responsible road freight transport. The Spanish Directorate-General for Traffic estimates that if the current 80 authorizations for Duo Trailers were fully utilized, they could prevent over 35,000 conventional truck journeys per year across Spain.
