APM Terminals has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL), a global leader in new energy solutions, to advance the energy transition across the logistics and port terminal sector. The partnership builds on both companies’ shared vision for decarbonising supply chains and scaling battery-electric container handling solutions.

The agreement was formalised by Grant Morrison, Head of Global Asset Category Management at APM Terminals, and Akin Li, Executive President of CATL’s Overseas Car Business. The signing was witnessed by senior representatives from both organisations, including procurement heads from APM Terminals’ Shanghai and Mumbai divisions, and senior executives from CATL’s commercial application and solutions teams.

“This strategic agreement strengthens our collaboration with CATL and supports our ambition to decarbonise terminal operations through battery-electric container handling equipment,” said Mr. Morrison.

Building on shared progress through ZEPA

Both organisations have previously collaborated under the umbrella of the Zero Emission Port Alliance (ZEPA)—a global initiative co-founded by APM Terminals to accelerate the adoption of emission-free solutions across the port value chain. The new agreement will deepen this relationship and scale practical deployments of electric terminal tractors and other battery-electric equipment, powered by CATL’s advanced high-performance battery systems.

Mr. Li commented: “We expect this partnership to fast-track the development of industry-leading electrification solutions and deliver measurable emissions reductions at terminals worldwide.”

Piloting innovation at scale

One of the first pilot projects under this partnership is already underway at Aqaba Container Terminal in Jordan, where battery-electric handling equipment powered by CATL batteries is in active use. The agreement will now expand the scope of collaboration across APM Terminals’ global network of more than 60 operational terminals and multiple development sites.

In addition to supplying next-generation battery systems, CATL will provide full lifecycle support, including optimisation strategies, after-sales services, and battery recycling. This will help APM Terminals address Scope 3 emissions and meet its industry-leading target of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.

Shared vision for sustainable logistics

Looking ahead, the partnership will also support knowledge sharing and co-development of technologies to enhance operational efficiency and environmental performance. The two companies aim to jointly develop solutions that align with their respective roadmaps, while helping ports and logistics hubs worldwide meet decarbonisation objectives.

APM Terminals is focused on deploying battery-electric equipment powered by renewable energy such as solar and wind, alongside operational strategies to reduce energy consumption, shorten cargo dwell times, and enhance building efficiency.

“This collaboration with CATL reflects a strong alignment of values and goals,” said Mr. Morrison. “By working together, we can deliver practical solutions that help reshape the environmental footprint of the terminal industry.”
