Manufacturing Boom and New Trade Framework Drive 38% Growth in Container Volumes

Vietnam has officially become the fastest-growing trade partner for the Port of Savannah, fueled by a massive surge in manufacturing and a strategic expansion of Vietnam’s logistics infrastructure.

Over the last five years, container trade between Savannah and Vietnam has increased by 38%, adding 104,000 TEUs to reach a total of 379,000 TEUs in fiscal year 2025. This growth is further supported by a new trade framework where the U.S. and Vietnam have agreed to reduce reciprocal tariffs to 20%, with some categories potentially reaching zero.

Strategic Services and Transit Efficiencies

Georgia Ports currently offers nine direct ocean carrier services connecting Savannah and Vietnam. Average transit times from Vietnam to the U.S. East Coast are approximately 33 days.

In November 2025, the Gemini cooperation (a partnership between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd) designated Savannah as its first U.S. East Coast port of call on the TP11/US1 service. This route, which originates in Haiphong, offers a 39-day transit with a rotation including:

Haiphong – Ningbo – Shanghai – Lazaro Cardenas – Savannah – Charleston – New York – Singapore.

Griff Lynch, Georgia Ports President and CEO, noted that Vietnam’s strategic location and business-friendly policies have made it an essential and expanding market for the region’s logistics backbone.

Diversified Cargo and Economic Impact

The trade relationship is characterized by a steady two-way flow of commodities.

  • U.S. Exports to Vietnam: Forest products, food, cotton, hardware, resins, and retail consumer goods.
  • U.S. Imports from Vietnam: Apparel, footwear, furniture, electronics, and machinery.

Vietnam’s deepening role in global electronics production is a primary driver of this volume. Major investments, such as the $23 billion committed by Samsung to its Vietnamese plants, now account for over half of the company’s global smartphone output. In 2024, total U.S.-Vietnam trade reached approximately $135 billion, solidifying Vietnam’s position as the second-largest trading partner for the U.S. after China.
