On March 5, 2026, Hong Kong’s maritime industry reached a significant milestone with the successful completion of the city’s inaugural green methanol bunkering operation. The mission, a collaborative effort between SINOBUNKER (a subsidiary of COSCO SHIPPING), Sinopec Hong Kong, and China Merchants Ro-Ro, officially marks Hong Kong’s entry into the era of green alternative fuel services.

This event represents the first anchorage-based green methanol bunkering operation in China, signaling a major step forward in the green transformation of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Innovative Technology: The “Daqing 268”

The operation was executed by the “Daqing 268,” China’s first methanol dual-fuel oil and chemical bunker vessel. Independently operated by SINOBUNKER, the vessel is a showcase of domestic technological advancement:

  • Power System: Features a 100% domestically produced core power system capable of running on both methanol and conventional fuel.
  • Capacity and Scale: Measuring 109.9 metres in length with a deadweight tonnage of 7,500 tons, the vessel has a total tank capacity of 10,362 cubic meters.
  • Versatility: Beyond methanol, the vessel is designed to transport and bunker a variety of clean energy products, including biodiesel and fuel oil.

Strategic Alignment and Regional Integration

The successful bunkering aligns with the strategic planning of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government to establish the city as a leading green maritime hub. By demonstrating the synergistic capabilities of Sinopec and COSCO SHIPPING, the operation lays a solid foundation for the future normalization of green methanol services across the region.

The “Daqing 268” holds legal operating qualifications for Hong Kong and Macao routes, serving as a vital link for sustainable maritime services. This milestone not only enhances Hong Kong’s competitive edge in global shipping but also supports the broader industry transition toward net-zero emissions.
