DP World Insetify Carbon Inset Trial

DP World has officially launched Insetify, a dedicated carbon insetting trial for ocean freight forwarding customers in Belgium, Portugal, and Sweden. Designed to provide immediate, measurable reductions in Scope 3 emissions, the program offers carbon credits at no additional cost to qualifying importers and exporters across key European trade lanes.

The trial, which began on 1 April 2026, follows the success of DP World’s UK Carbon Inset Programme, which registered over 250,000 TEUs and issued 9,000 tCO2e in credits during its first year.

How the Insetify Trial Works

The program is designed to be seamless, with credits applied automatically to qualifying bookings made through DP World’s freight forwarding offices in the three trial countries.

  • Eligibility Threshold: Customers must ship at least 25 TEUs per quarter.
  • Credit Allocation: Qualifying shipments receive 100 kg CO2e per TEU.
  • Cost: Provided at no additional cost to the customer.
  • Example: A shipper moving 50 TEUs in a single quarter will receive 5,000 kg (5t CO2e) of verified carbon credits.

Insetting vs. Offsetting: A Pragmatic Approach

Unlike traditional carbon offsets, which fund external environmental projects like reforestation, carbon insets reduce emissions directly within the logistics value chain.

John Trenchard, VP – Sustainable International Supply Chains, Europe, emphasized: “The Insetify trial allows for a pragmatic approach to managing residual emissions as part of a longer-term, holistic plan.”

Key Technical Details:

  • Fuel-Based Reductions: Credits are generated by deploying incrementally lower-carbon fuels (such as biofuels) within the network of DP World Shipping Solutions (formerly Unifeeder).
  • Third-Party Verification: All insets are verified by Bureau Veritas and managed through the 123Carbon platform to ensure transparency and prevent double-counting.
  • Scope 3 Impact: The program directly tackles hard-to-abate transport emissions that fall under a shipper’s Scope 3 reporting requirements.

Strategic Hub Expansion

The launch of Insetify coincides with significant regional expansions for DP World:

  • Sweden: The trial launch aligns with the opening of new offices in Stockholm and Gothenburg. DP World Sweden is further targeting 25% of shipments via rail and sea in its first year to reduce road-related emissions.
  • Portugal: The program builds on the recently established European Control Tower and freight forwarding branch in Porto.
  • Belgium: Leveraging the massive Port of Antwerp hub, the program integrates DP World’s terminal operations with its chemical-sector logistics expertise.

Building Sustainability Knowledge

To ensure customers can effectively integrate these credits into their ESG reporting, the Insetify trial includes specialized sustainability training. This initiative helps shippers understand the Book and Claim methodology and how to use e-documentation to eliminate paper processes—a goal DP World Sweden aims to achieve 100% within its first operational year.
